Acorns

BREAKING NEWS... 2025 CHAMPIONS!

The Andover Acorns team in the Whitchurch & District League is captained by Andy Brown.

Acorns finished the season with a record of 11 wins from 16 games, with a season-long record of 867 shots for (the most in the league) and 653 against for a 54-41 average in each game.

Andy Brown writes:

'Acorns were formed two years ago due to the Club’s success in recruiting new players and due to demand from players themselves.

The team was made up primarily of new and inexperienced members, alongside some more experienced players who wanted to compete and aid those less experienced.

In their first year, having led early on, the team ended up in a mid-table position. However, in only their second season, Acorns romped the League, finishing up as champions. After a good start, Acorns took over at the top of the table in the fourth week, a lead which they managed to hold on to for the rest of the season despite stiff opposition from Friary (Winchester) and Oakley Kites, who finished second and third respectfully. Acorns won with 57.5 points, 2.5 points more than also-promoted Friary.'

Team captain Andy Brown said ‘It’s a privilege to lead such a brilliant team, where everyone performs each week. The team shows great collective spirit and support, something that was laid down originally last season and built on during this.’

Whilst not being able to name each individual member, notable newbies in the team this year were Ady and Angela Aspinall, in only their second season, and Malhar Hathi. Malhar hails from Mumbai, India, where the sport is virtually unknown and, until arriving in Andover to work (at Twinings), following earning his master’s degree at Nottingham, had never contemplated the game. This was his first season and he played well, having otherwise only had a few games indoors last winter.

Andy concludes, 'Everyone is looking forward to competing in League 3 next year. The ethos that has driven Acorns this year is –

  1. Do your best.
  2. Enjoy the game.

If you can say yes to both, then that we define as success.'
