Finals Day 2024

Arguably the most eagerly-awaited day in the club's season, this year's Finals Day was to be held on Saturday 7 September, though the terrible weather the day before led to the programme for the day being postponed to allow the green to dry out and thus be playable.

However, on the basis that every cloud has a silver lining, if Finals Day was always going to be terrifically exciting, this year we managed to double the excitement, bringing you now not one Finals Day, but two, the first on Thursday 12 September; the second on Saturday 14 September.

The revised schedule for the days, along with the match outcomes is as follows:

Thursday 12 September

1030 Ladies 2 Woods: Jackie Kingston v Cynthia Hamilton (marker: Sue Milton). Note: postponed (new date TBA)

1400 Women's Championship: Jackie Kingston v Sue Milton (marker: Cynthia Hamilton). Note: postponed (new date TBA)

1600 Pairs: Dave Clipsom and Mark Slade v Mick Corden and Roy Slydel

This was a keenly contested final with Dave and Mark moving into an early lead which they never relinquished up to the 14th end when hail stopped play, at 21-5. Mick and Roy thereafter decided that the match situation was realistically too far gone to be rescued, and conceded..

Saturday 14 September

1000 Handicap: Sue Mlton v Brad Godden (marker: Steve Baker)

Bradley was given a two-shot start in the handicap, and had a very good game winning the final despite some great bowls also from Sue.

1000 Novice Singles: Dave Taplin v John Cocks (marker: David Hamilton)

This year the novices trophy - now the Roy Turner trophy - belonged to John, who won the match after being runner-up in the novices final last year.

1100 Men's 2 Woods: Jim Carnegie v Andy Carnegie (marker: Steve Baker)

Uniquely in the history of the Club, this proved to be a family affair with a father and son match-up between Jim and Andrew. This was a tenacious battle, with it being 10-10 on the 16th end. However, Andrew won the next two ends and secured the final against his Dad.

1400 Men's Championship: Brad Godden v Dave Taplin (marker: Steve Baker)

Both players kept spectators on the edge of their seats with Bradley clinching his 2nd win of the day. A special shout out to Dave Taplin: for getting to two finals in his 2nd year at the club, with some impressive wins en route.
